Hemosiderosis, pulmonary
OVERVIEW: Rare disease of unknown etiology. Must be distinguished from Goodpasture's syndrome and from lung hemorrhage in systemic lupus erythematosus.
• Characteristics - episodes of hemoptysis, hemorrhage into the lung, pulmonary infiltration, secondary iron deficiency anemia. Most common in children. Pathology shows diffuse infiltration with hemosiderin-containing macrophages. Death may occur from massive hemorrhage, although patients may live for several years with pulmonary fibrosis and insufficiency.
