Hantavirus

Hantavirus

OVERVIEW:

A genus of the Bunyaviridae family responsible for pneumonia and hemorrhagic fevers. Disease transmission is associated with infected rodents, who manifest no apparent symptoms, but shed virus in feces, urine and saliva. The hantavirus strain that causes disease in Europe and Asia is distinctly different from the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome occurring mainly in southwestern U.S. This syndrome, progressing from flu-like symptoms to respiratory failure, and possibly death is known for its high mortality.

CAUSES:

• human infection may occur from inhalation, ingestion (e.g., contaminated food or water), contact with rodent excrement or rodent bites; person-to-person spread or transmission by mosquitos, fleas or other arthropods has not been reported

TREATMENT

• supportive (oxygenation, vital signs monitoring, stabilization of heart rate and blood pressure)
• fluid volume replacement (with caution not to overhydrate)
• dopamine or epinephrine for hypotension
• ribavirin

MISCELLANEOUS

ICD-9-CM:

079.99 infection, viral, unspecified nature or site
