Budd-Chiari's syndrome


OVERVIEW:

Symptomatic occlusion or obstruction of the hepatic veins, causing hepatomegaly, abdominal pain and tenderness, intractable ascites, mild jaundice, portal hypertension and liver failure. The onset may be acute. In cases of complete occlusion, death may occur within days of onset. More often, there is a chronic course with survival for months or years.

CAUSES:

• trauma
• oral contraceptives
• polycythemia rubra vera
• paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
• hypercoagulable state
• pyrrolizine alkaloids

TREATMENT


• portacaval shunt
