Brown-Sequard syndrome

OVERVIEW:

Syndrome due to damage of one half of the spinal cord, resulting in ipsilateral paralysis and loss of discriminatory and joint sensation, and contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation.

CAUSES:

• spinal trauma
• unilateral spinal cord lesion
• spinal cord tumors
• spinal cord radiation
• spinal cord compression

TREATMENT

• surgery
• decompression

MISCELLANEOUS

SYNONYMS:

• hemiparaplegic syndrome
• spastic spinal monoplegia syndrome
