Adenocarcinoma of the rectum

OVERVIEW:

A slow-growth rate malignancy that depends on routine examination to discover before symptom-producing size. Most common symptom is blood passage at the time of bowel movement. All rectal bleeding should raise suspicion of cancer until proven otherwise. Usual course - progressive; surgical cure.

CAUSES:

• ulcerative colitis
• previous rectal cancer
• familial polyposis

TREATMENT

• surgery
• radiotherapy
